May 22, 2008 (Washington, D.C.) - Proskauer Rose LLP, an international law firm with more than 750 lawyers worldwide, is proud to announce that two associates in its Washington, D.C. office were selected as recipients of the Frederick B. Abramson Award for their participation in the DC Bar Pro Bono Program. The award specifically recognizes the firm's participation in the DC Bar's Project 990, which was designed to help nonprofit organizations meet the IRS's revised reporting requirements.
Proskauer associates Jose Padilla and Lauren Rexroat were singled out for their work in co-authoring a legal alert for the project entitled "Independent Directors and Tax Exempt Organizations," which outlined the fundamental principles of director independence and their application in the non-profit sector. The alert was created to assist local non-profit organizations in understanding the implications of the IRS's comprehensive modifications to Form 990, which tax-exempt organizations use to file federal tax returns.
"Proskauer's steadfast dedication to pro bono initiatives continues to be a vital part of our firm's overall success," said Trevor Chaplick, co-managing partner of the firm's Washington, D.C. office. "We are honored to receive this award and congratulate Jose and Lauren on their outstanding efforts."
Proskauer will receive the Abramson Award at the DC Bar's Annual Awards Dinner and Business Meeting June 26 at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
Proskauer's Pro Bono Initiative (PBI) Committee is comprised of lawyers of all levels in each of the firm's departments. Proskauer's enduring pro bono commitment has long provided legal services to the disadvantaged and the poor, a mission that expanded in scope and diversity with the formation of the PBI Committee in 2006, which is forging new partnerships and community volunteer activities, and lending momentum to the work the firm is doing for clients in the areas of urban justice, equal rights, asylum, health, and many others.
