February 14, 2008 (New York, NY) - Proskauer Rose is pleased to announce that partner Peter J. W. Sherwin has been elected chair of both the Citizens Union and the Citizens Union Foundation, independent, non-partisan organizations that are dedicated to promoting good government and political reform in the city and state of New York.
Citizens Union serves as a watchdog for the public interest and an advocate for the common good and works to ensure fair elections, clean campaigns and open, effective government that is accountable to the citizens of New York. Citizens Union Foundation is the non-profit research, education and advocacy organization affiliated with Citizens Union. The Citizens Union Foundation also publishes Gotham Gazette, which offers a front-row seat to New York City policies and politics.
Mr. Sherwin joined the board of Citizens Union in 2003, and has since been an active member. He has chaired Citizens Union's dinner committee since 2006.
At Proskauer Rose, Mr. Sherwin chairs the International Arbitration Practice Group, where he represents numerous corporate entities and individuals with a concentration on cross-border disputes relating to high-stakes private investments and sophisticated financial products. He is a U.S. Representative to the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Commission on Arbitration, which establishes the rules and policies for ICC arbitration and dispute resolution, and is very active in the New York City Bar, where he recently chaired the Council on Judicial Administration. Mr. Sherwin was also appointed by New York Chief Judge Judith Kaye to Mayor Bloomberg's Advisory Committee on the Judiciary and is a member of the Executive Committee of the New York State Bar Association, where he chairs the Special Committee on Collateral Consequences of Criminal Proceedings. He graduated from Columbia University School of Law and received his B.S. and B.A. from Washington & Lee University.
