November 12, 2014 (New York) – On November 3 and 4, 2014, Proskauer took more than 1,500 calls at a call center hosted at its 11 Times Square headquarters in collaboration with Election Protection – a nonpartisan program administered by the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
Participants included 31 Proskauer employees, including nine who served as shift captains, and 62 non-Proskauer employees, including alumni, clients, and former and upcoming summer associates. Volunteers answered questions on myriad issues (including where and how to vote, voter identification requirements, registration issues and provisional ballots), and took reports of Election Day problems (such as malfunctioning voting machines and poll worker errors) from callers from New Jersey, Ohio, West Virginia, Arkansas and Georgia.
Proskauer is one of many law firms that participate in the Election Protection project in locations throughout the country. The firm has hosted a call center in each federal election since 2008. In 2012, Proskauer was assigned to assist with the overwhelming need for voter support in New Jersey, due to polling center relocations caused by Superstorm Sandy.
According to Proskauer associate David Mordkoff, “Voting is arguably the most important right we have under the Constitution, and being able to provide voters with the basic information they need to vote and to help those who are trying to reach out to find the best way to get their ballot counted is important.”
Proskauer partner Jennifer Scullion and associates David Mordkoff, Jared Zajac and Benjamin Rattner organized this year's call center, with the assistance of project assistant Marlee Melendy. They also served as shift captains along with partners Amanda Nussbaum, David Weinberger and Ed Kornreich; associate Julia Pizzi; paralegal Joan Hoffman; and alumna Erika Stallings.
The firm’s work with Election Protection was noted in articles in Law360 and the National Law Journal.
