Nigel van Zyl is a Partner in the Private Investment Funds group, resident in the London office. He has over 12 years’ experience as a legal adviser to the private equity and broader private funds industry.
Nigel advises private equity and other alternative asset fund managers, institutional investors and investment advisors on a broad range of issues, including fund formations and fund raisings, secondary transactions, fund investments, internal governance, compliance and organization, carried interest and co-investment arrangements, spinouts, re-organizations and restructurings.
A significant portion of Nigel’s practice is representing general partners in the formation, raising, maintenance and ongoing operation and compliance of private equity, infrastructure and renewable energy funds and funds of funds. He also represents institutional investors and funds of funds, or their advisors, with respect to their investments into private equity and other alternative asset funds.
Nigel advises buyers and sellers of secondary fund interests and the structures used for these transactions, including synthetic secondary and co-investment structures.
Nigel is ranked in Legal 500 UK 2011-2012, Chambers UK 2010-2013, Who's Who Legal 2011-2012, PLC Which Lawyer? Investment Funds 2011 and was selected by The Lawyer magazine as one of the UK's Hot 100 Lawyers for 2011.
In December 2012, Nigel edited the LPA Anatomised a Private Equity International publication. In addition to editing the book, he also wrote articles for the publication, including "LPAs: A Regional Comparison" and "Renegotiating LPA Terms.
