Lawrence J. Rothenberg is a Partner in the Personal Planning Department. During his career at Proskauer, which began in 1965, Larry has had an extremely diverse practice, representing a broad range of clients in estate planning and estate administration. Having been involved in many litigated estate situations, Larry has become extremely attuned to the nuances of estate and financial planning for families, enabling him to bring to his clients' planning a “human dimension,” in addition to the most up-to-date tax planning opportunities.

Larry represents several families with significant multigenerational wealth, and has assisted them in the structuring of their estate plans so as to minimize gift, estate and generation-skipping taxes in the transmission of their wealth through several generations. He also has worked with the owners of closely held companies, structuring plans that will enable their businesses to remain intact at the death of the owner, and to insure the desired continuity of ownership and control.

In addition, he has had a great deal of experience in the planning and administration of estates of creative artists. In this connection, he worked on the estate plan and administration of the estate of Leonard Bernstein. He also handled the administration of the estate of the choreographer George Balanchine and the artist Keith Haring.

Larry also has extensive experience in representing charitable institutions in connection with trust and estate matters. He regularly does work for Mt. Sinai Medical Center in this area, and serves as counsel to the Haas-Oppenheimer Trust, a large privately endowed charitable trust. He has worked closely with several public charities in setting up planned giving programs.

As a member of both the New York and Florida bars, Larry is able to advise clients on issues relating to personal planning for residents of those states, and assist them in effecting a change of domicile that will stand up for income and estate tax purposes. He also has represented numerous clients in the negotiation and preparation of pre-nuptial agreements.

Larry has frequently lectured on estate planning, both to lawyers and, on behalf of charitable organizations, to lay groups. He has served on committees of the City and State Bar Associations in the areas of estate planning and administration.

Active in a broad range of charitable activities, Larry serves on the boards of numerous charities, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York, and was recently selected as Chairperson of the Professional Advisors Council of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
