Elizabeth Kowal is a Special Employment Litigation Counsel in the Labor & Employment Law Department, resident in the Boston office. Her practice focuses on defending employers in complex and single-plaintiff employment litigation, including class action and collective action claims, alleging race, age, disability and gender discrimination, retaliation, sexual harassment, wrongful discharge and violation of wage and hour laws. Elizabeth has also represented clients in other types of civil litigation including claims related to non-competition, other restrictive covenants and breach of contract. She has represented clients at arbitrations and mediations, as well as at the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, Equal Employment Opportunities Commission and state and federal trial and appellate courts, including the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
Elizabeth provides advice on compliance with various laws affecting the workplace, including the FMLA, ADEA, Title VII, ADA, FLSA and state leave, wage and discrimination laws. She also assists her clients with all aspects of employment policies and practices, including hiring, termination, classification of workers, and drafting employee handbooks.
In addition to litigation and providing advice, Elizabeth has been asked by clients to perform internal investigations into allegations of harassment, discrimination and violations of corporate ethics. She has also conducted training for clients on diversity, harassment prevention, litigation avoidance and classification of employees.
