Awards and Honors

The outstanding work of our lawyers has been recognized by a number of organizations and we also are proud to present Golden Gavel awards each year to recognize our lawyers for their outstanding efforts in a broad array of projects that help people and families around the world.

2018 Awards and Honors

  • The New York State Bar Association honored Proskauer with an award for its pro bono achievements at the 2018 Justice for All Luncheon.

2017 Awards and Honors

  • Partner Michael Cardozo received the Anti-Defamation League’s 2017 Human Relations Award for his unique dedication to public service and the public interest, his twelve years as Corporation Counsel of the City of New York and prior service as President of the New York City Bar Association.
  • Partner John Gross was honored by the New York State Unified Court System, New York County Lawyers Association, and New York State Bar Association for his outstanding work and dedicated pro bono service in the Office for Justice Initiatives’ Access to Justice Program.

  • Proskauer was recognized for International Pro Bono Excellence by the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice for its pro bono work on behalf of The Human Rights Commission of El Salvador.

  • Partner Lawrence Weinstein, associate Jon English, and Proskauer received The Legal Aid Society’s 2017 Pro Bono Publico Award for outstanding pro bono service to low-income New Yorkers.

  • Pro Bono Partner Bill Silverman and Proskauer were honored by the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women for their outstanding commitment to ending human trafficking.

  • Proskauer was honored by The Safe Center LI for its pro bono litigation on behalf of a crime victim.

  • Proskauer received an award from ThinkForward for the London office’s pro bono and public service support for charity’s program for at-risk youth.

  • Partner Bradley Ruskin was honored with The Jewish Theological Seminary’s Judge Simon H. Rifkind Award in recognition of his commitment to public service.

  • Proskauer received the City Bar Justice Award for its outstanding advocacy on behalf of low-income veterans seeking disability benefits for their service-connected injuries.

  • Proskauer was recognized by Kids in Need of Defense with the Allegiance Award for its commitment to defending unaccompanied immigrant children against deportation.  

  • Proskauer was honored by the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County for the pro bono achievements of the Boca Raton office.

  • Senior Counsel Jonathan Galler received the “Silver Pin” for Pro Bono Service from the Supreme Court of Florida in recognition of his exceptional pro bono service in 2016.

  • Associate Maja Zerjal received the Pro Bono Star award from Human Rights First for her zealous advocacy for asylum seekers.

  • Partner Allan Bloom and associate Andrew Smith were honored by Urban Pathways with the Spirit Award for their pro bono wage and hour counseling.

2016 Awards and Honors
  • Proskauer was recognized by the Legal Aid Society with the 2016 Pro Bono Publico Award for Outstanding Advocacy in Championing the Rights of the Accused.
  • Proskauer was honored by The Door’s Legal Services Center at the Joining in Justice event for the firm’s longstanding commitment to public service and pro bono work.

  • Proskauer was honored by the Center Against Domestic Violence at the Stand Up Against Domestic Violence event for the firm's 20 years of pro bono support to the organization.

  • Associate Rachel Wolkinson was recognized by the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project with the award for "Child Advocacy Volunteer of the Year."

  • Associates Lisa Markofsky and Andy Thomson received the Pro Bono Civil Litigation Award from the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County.

2015 Awards and Honors

  • Proskauer was awarded the Pro Bono Citizenship Prize at The American Lawyers Asia Legal Awards.
  • Proskauer received The Center for Family Representation's Legal Champion Award for the firm’s pro bono services to poor parents in New York City whose children are at risk of being removed to foster care.

  • Proskauer was recognized as a Platinum Honoree at The New York State Bar Association’s Empire State Counsel Awards.

  • Proskauer received The Legal Aid Society’s Pro Bono Publico Award.

  • Proskauer was honored with a Pro Bono Leadership Award from Legal Services NYC.

  • Proskauer received the National Bar Association Young Lawyers Division “Answering the Call for Justice” Award for the firm’s pro bono assistance to federal prisoners through the Clemency Project.

  • Partner Michael Cardozo received the American Lawyer Lifetime Achievement Award for his commitment to public service.

  • Partner Betsy Plevan was recognized with the Servant of Justice Award by the Legal Aid Society for her commitment to pro bono representation.

  • Pro Bono Partner William Silverman received Sanctuary for Families’ Above & Beyond Award for excellence in pro bono advocacy for domestic violence and human trafficking victims.

  • Associate Rachel Wolkinson was honored as the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project "Guardian Ad Litem Volunteer of the Year."

2014 Awards and Honors  

  • Partner Lois Thompson was honored by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund with the Excellence in Legal Service award for her work as pro bono counsel in a major school desegregation case in Tucson, Arizona.
  • Partner Katherine Parker and Proskauer were honored with an award from Girl Be Heard, a not-for-profit theater collective and educational program, for providing trusted counsel and a dedicated team of pro bono support.

  • Litigation partner and former New York City Corporation Counsel Michael Cardozo was honored with Citizens Union's Public Service Award, recognizing his commitment to improving the lives of New Yorkers and his tireless efforts to effect change within the legal profession and the courts.

  • Proskauer was a recipient of The Legal Aid Society's 2014 Pro Bono Publico Awards for outstanding service to the Society and its clients. In addition, associate Pietro Deserio was honored with an award for working with a client to seal her felony and misdemeanor criminal drug convictions from more than two decades ago.

  • Proskauer was recognized by the National Senior Citizens Law Center with the inaugural NSCLC Justice Award for its work on the Clark v. Astrue litigation, which successfully challenged the U.S. Social Security Administration over its practice of denying old age and disability benefits to otherwise eligible people based solely on their having outstanding probation or parole warrants.
  • Partner Michael Kessler was a recipient of the 2014 Jeremy G. Epstein Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service for his long-standing relationship with the New York City Bar Bankruptcy Assistance Project, specifically with helping bankruptcy debtors obtain discharges of their student loan debts.

  • Proskauer was honored with the 2014 Animal Legal Defense Fund Advancement in Animal Law Pro Bono Achievement Award, recognizing the firm's commitment to and success in providing pro bono legal services dedicated to ALDF's mission of protecting the lives and advancing the interests of animals through the legal system.
  • Partner Joe Baumgarten and associate Andrew Rice were named by Legal Services NYC as two of the Top 30 Pro Bono Attorneys of 2014 for their work on behalf of the organization.
  • Proskauer received the Lawyers Alliance for New York's 2014 institutional Cornerstone Award, which recognizes contributions in business and transactional pro bono legal service.
  • Partner Michael Kessler and a team that included associates Jeffrey Chubak and Andrea Miller received an "In Court Champions" award presented by the Bankruptcy Assistance Project for their work helping debtors obtain student loan discharges.

2013 Awards and Honors  

  • The New York State Bar Association honored Proskauer with the President's Pro Bono Service Award for the First Judicial District on May 1, Law Day, in recognition of outstanding work in the Clark v. Astrue case. Proskauer lawyers Russell Hirschhorn, Steven Obus, Bettina Plevan and Brian Rauch were honored for leading the case.
  • The Urban Justice Center honored Proskauer at the annual UJC Community Justice Awards for its instrumental work with the organization. Proskauer partnered with the Urban Justice Center in the case Clark v. Astrue, which helped as many as 140,000 Americans nationwide get their Social Security or Supplemental Security Income benefits restored.

  • Common Cause honored Proskauer for our work with the 2012 Election Protection Project organized by The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights under Law.

  • My Sisters' Place presented Proskauer with the Voices for Change award.

2012 Awards and Honors  

  • The New York State Bar Association honored Proskauer with a Silver Supporter Award.
  • Proskauer was awarded the Pro Bono Service Award by the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles.

  • At the sixth annual Golden Gavel Awards, 46 lawyers and staff were honored for their outstanding service to pro bono clients.   • Proskauer was honored by the Mental Health Project of the Urban Justice Center for its work in Clark v. Astrue.

  • Interise honored Proskauer with the newly established Exceptional Ally Award. The award was given in recognition of the Firm’s significant contribution to the advancement of the company’s mission to stimulate revitalization in lower income communities.

2011 Awards and Honors  

  • Citizens for Juvenile Justice honored Pro Bono Initiative Committee Chair Scott Harshbarger with its Leadership Award.
  • The New York State Bar Association honored the Firm with a Gold Supporter Award and recognized a record 139 Proskauer lawyers as Empire State Counsel at the 11th annual "Justice for All" luncheon.
  • Thirteen DC attorneys were named to the Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll, for providing 50+ hours of pro bono work during 2011. Eight of these attorneys were recognized on the “High Honor Roll" for providing at least 100 hours of pro bono service.
  • At the fifth annual Golden Gavel Awards, 24 lawyers and staff were honored for their outstanding service to pro bono clients.   • International Litigation Counsel Eric Blinderman was honored by the New York State Bar Association with the President's Pro Bono Service Award for the First District.
  • Boston Associate Frank White was presented with a 2011 Outstanding Service Award by the Political Asylum / Immigration Representation (PAIR) Project.
  • Proskauer received the S. Jeanne Hall Pro Bono Service Award 2011 from Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.
  • New York Partner Ron Sernau was honored for his extensive pro bono work on behalf of Harlem Village Academies at the organization's annual gala.
  • Lawrence Elbaum was honored with a Family Defender Award for his work on behalf of Brooklyn Family Defense Project.
  • Lani Butler, Joe Cohen, Lisa Herrnson and Marc Mandelman were honored with the "Volunteer Appreciation Award" in recognition of their outstanding pro bono work by the Children's Law Center New York.
  • Seth Fier was honored by The Legal Aid Society at its 2011 Pro Bono Publico Awards for his pro bono work. The Firm was also recognized, receiving an award for our extern program for deferred Associates.
  • Proskauer's Boston office was recognized by the Middlesex District Attorney for their support of the 209A Domestic Violence Initiative.
