Private Client Services

Overview Press Room

At Proskauer, private client services for individuals and families is in our genes and has been an integral part of the firm since our founder, William Rose, focused on this work in the late 1800s.

Our Private Client Services Group has built on this foundation to become one of the pre-eminent practices of its kind in the United States. We are trusted advisers to owners of public and private companies of all kinds, intellectual property owners, performing artists, executives, Internet entrepreneurs, art collectors and investors, professionals and real estate developers, among others.

The laws that we deal with — notably those that affect how wealth can be transferred, establish the responsibilities of executors, trustees and other fiduciaries, and impose tax liabilities along the way — are especially complicated. Our team recognizes that one size doesn’t fit all, and can navigate clients through the complexities of any issue.

We concentrate on three core areas: estate and gift planning, estate and trust administration, and fiduciary litigation.

What distinguishes us from private client services practices at other firms?

360° representation. As one of the largest private client services practices with deep bench strength, we are a one-stop shop for estate and trust planning, estate and trust administration, pre- and post-mortem tax planning, cross-border planning and fiduciary litigation.

  • We represent clients holistically across all of their estate-related needs.
  • Our geographic reach enables us to seamlessly serve clients with assets nearly anywhere in the world.

  • In the U.S., we have extensive capabilities in multiple jurisdictions that notably include New York, Florida and California.

Go-to lawyers. Our group includes some of the most well-known and renowned lawyers in the field. We are sought out not only for our experience, but also for our creativity in finding solutions for clients.

Fiduciary litigation. We are one of the few large firms with litigators highly experienced in fiduciary matters — a rarity in Florida, for example, where much of this litigation takes place. Few firms can match our combination of national reach and command of fiduciary issues.

Cross-border planning. As Proskauer has expanded internationally, so have we. We represent multinational families in their cross-border tax and estate planning needs, non-U.S. citizens investing in or moving to the U.S., and U.S. citizens living and working abroad.

Asset diversity. Our estate planning work covers an especially wide range of assets. In addition to traditional assets such as cash, securities and real estate, we plan for works of art, closely held businesses, intellectual property rights, private equity interests, private investment funds, digital assets and sports franchises. We also are one of the first practices with experience in planning with bitcoins.

Charitable planning. Our team understands exactly how important charitable giving can be to individuals and families. We help our clients achieve their philanthropic planning goals in ways that are financially advantageous, including the establishment of charitable trusts and private foundations. Many members of our team also serve in leadership positions on various charitable boards.

Intellectual firepower. Team members teach and lecture at numerous universities and companies, and are actively involved in practice-focused bar associations on the national, state and local levels. They are frequently sought after for speaking engagements across the country, serve as adjunct professors at some of the most reputable law schools, author and edit articles and books, comment on proposed legislation and serve as expert witnesses. Most have a masters degree in tax law.

Proskauer resources. Proskauer’s vast resources are at our disposal. We can provide clients with high-quality representation in legal disciplines that notably include tax, litigation, corporate, real estate, executive compensation, labor and employment, private equity and private investment funds.

A record of recognition

The Private Client Services Group and its individual lawyers consistently earn recognition for their achievements, and have done so for many years. Several lawyers are Fellows of the prestigious American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. And leading legal and industry publications — Chambers USA, U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms,” The Best Lawyers in America, Worth, Citywealth Leaders List — have singled out the team and its members as among the best in the business.
