Former EEOC Vice Chair Leslie Silverman to Join Proskauer Rose in Washington, D.C.

Silverman Led EEOC's Efforts to Develop Nationwide Program Aimed at Combating Systemic Discrimination

September 4, 2008 (Washington, D.C.) - Former U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Vice Chair Leslie E. Silverman, who led the way in developing the EEOC's recent nationwide program aimed at combating systemic discrimination, will join Proskauer Rose LLP, an international law firm with more than 750 lawyers worldwide, as a partner in its Washington, D.C. office.

Ms. Silverman, who will join Proskauer's Labor & Employment Department, became Vice Chair of the EEOC in 2006 after serving as a Commissioner since 2002.  She led the EEOC's Systemic Task Force, which examined the Commission's efforts to combat systemic discrimination and resulted in the launch of a comprehensive nationwide program to address pattern or practice, policy or class cases in which alleged discrimination has had a broad impact on an industry, profession, company or geographic location.  She also helped to spearhead the Commission's examination of discrimination against workers with caregiving responsibilities, an effort that culminated in new EEOC enforcement guidelines.

"Leslie has been at the forefront of several of the EEOC's most significant recent initiatives, including its systemic discrimination program, which marked a fundamental change in how the agency investigates and litigates cases," said Paul Salvatore, Co-Chair of the Labor & Employment Department of Proskauer Rose.  "She has also been a champion of companies developing recruitment and retention programs designed to help employees balance work and family responsibilities."

"As the EEOC directs its attention to broader cases and steps up enforcement efforts in a variety of areas, we are delighted to welcome this distinguished public servant and talented lawyer to our team and be able to offer her vast experience and insights to serve our employer clients," he added.

Prior to joining the EEOC, Ms. Silverman served for five years as Labor Counsel to the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.  Before that, she specialized in employment law and litigation at a Washington, D.C. law firm.  A graduate of the University of Vermont, she earned a Juris Doctor degree from the American University, Washington College of Law and a Masters degree in labor and employment law from the Georgetown University Law Center.

With more than 150 lawyers, Proskauer Rose LLP's labor, employment and employee benefits department is one of the oldest and largest in the nation.  It has been described by Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyer as "one of the premier employment practices nationwide," with a "deep bench" that puts Proskauer "in a league of its own and home to a number of the sector's best known figures."  Spanning seven offices nationwide with an eighth in Paris, the department handles complex employment law and employment litigation matters as well as traditional collective bargaining and labor relations matters. It also includes one of the largest employee benefits and executive compensation practices in the nation, with its own litigation group to handle fiduciary and other claims under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, as well as one of the country's largest immigration groups and an international labor and employment practice.
