July 27, 2007 - (New York, NY) - Proskauer Rose LLP, an international law firm with over 700 lawyers worldwide, is proud to announce that partner Charles Ortner, who represents many of the leading institutions and creators in the media and entertainment industries, was named one of the top 100 outside counsel in The Hollywood Reporter 's new "Power Lawyers" issue.
Mr. Ortner was selected by the magazine's editors for his work as a litigator on behalf of some of the world's leading record companies, music publishers and motion picture companies including Sony/BMG Music Entertainment, EMI and Sony Pictures, as well as superstar recording artists and record producers including Madonna, Shania Twain, Janet Jackson, The Police, Bon Jovi and Rick Rubin.
The Hollywood Reporter's "Power Lawyers" list was compiled after extensive interviews of many of the entertainment industry's business leaders and in-house counsel, and recognizes leading lawyers serving the entertainment industry in the categories of litigation, talent, corporate, IP-tech, government, and labor. Of the 28 lawyers named in the litigation category, only five - including Mr. Ortner - are based in New York.
"We congratulate Chuck on this achievement and his exemplary work and contributions to the firm throughout his stellar career," said Allen I. Fagin, chairman of Proskauer Rose.
"Chuck's ability to evaluate business situations coupled with his keen insight about human nature and behavior give him an edge and advantage, which make him an extraordinary attorney and master counsel,' said Neil Portnow, president of The Recording Academy (the GRAMMY® Award organization), for which Mr. Ortner serves as National Legal Counsel .
Over the course of his career, the matters which Mr. Ortner has handled, as a litigator or as a counselor and strategic advisor, cover virtually the entire entertainment and media legal and business landscapes including intellectual property, defamation, privacy, internal corporate investigations, contract disputes, and significant business transactions including mergers and joint ventures.
Mr. Ortner was recently named as a charter member of the SoundExchange Artists Advisory Board, a newly-formed industry group of 25 leading music industry lawyers and artist managers. He is also the president of the Kanye West Foundation, an organization founded by the music superstar Kanye West to combat the problem of public school dropouts through the use of music education programming.
