Proskauer’s Nancy Sher Cohen, Steven Gilford and Marc Rosenthal Win 2012 Burton Award for Legal Achievement

Recognized for Their Guidance on Assessing Insurance Coverage and Quantifying Loss Claims Following Global Aftermath of Japan Tragedy

June 12, 2012 (New York, Chicago and Los Angeles) – Proskauer Insurance Recovery & Counseling Group co-heads Nancy Sher Cohen and Steven Gilford and Partner Marc Rosenthal were honored with a 2012 Burton Award for Legal Achievement for their analysis of the business insurance implications of Japan’s tragic 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The article, The Global Impact of Japan’s Disasters, written with the support of Proskauer Associates Ronald Valenzuela and Sheri Drucker Davis, was published immediately after the disaster and delved into assessments of its impact on businesses globally, including disruptions to the global transportation network for products, component parts and supplies.

“Given the increased seismological activity and its devastating effects that we’ve seen …many companies will now be thinking about purchasing earthquake and tsunami coverage to handle property damage and business interruption,” wrote the authors. “Although claims for such losses will be varied and involve different types of insurance coverage, they are likely to raise the same issues we deal with in almost all matters: causation, trigger, notice, quantification and, for insurance claims, number of occurrences, limits and deductibles, defenses and exclusions, among others.”

The Burton Awards for Legal Achievement, a program run in association with the Library of Congress, recognizes excellence in legal writing. The winners are chosen from entries submitted by the nation's 1,000 largest and most prestigious law firms. Honorees are recognized at the annual Burton Awards Program and Gala, which was held at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, on June 11, 2012, with U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens (retired) as guest speaker.
