| Biography:
Paul M. Booth is a partner in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department
and is resident in the Washington, D.C. office. Dr. Booth is a member of the
Patent Law and the Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical & Medical Technology Groups.
Dr. Booth focuses his practice on the counseling of clients in the areas of
biotechnology, chemistry and pharmaceuticals. He is experienced in preparing
validity and infringement opinions and in prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent
applications.
Before entering the practice of law, Dr. Booth had extensive experience in
the biotechnology industry directing research groups in the fields of cell adhesion,
lymphokines and cytokines, and catalytic antibodies. He also has broad research
training in synthetic organic chemistry, including the development of new methodologies
for the synthesis of macrolide and glycopeptide antibiotics.
Dr. Booth has authored several articles on regulatory topics, particularly
related to the International Conference on Harmonisation. His article, "FDA
Implementation of Standards Developed by the International Conference on Harmonisation,"
published in the Food and Drug Law Journal, won first prize in the 1996
H. Thomas Austern writing competition, sponsored by the Food and Drug Law Institute.
Dr. Booth also coauthored articles entitled "ICH Sets Standards for Drug
Developers," and "Genomics Race Raises Ownership Boundary Issue,"
both published in The National Law Journal, in addition to numerous scientific
papers in journals such as Gene, The Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal
of the Chemical Society, Analytical Chemistry, Tetrahedron,
and Tetrahedron Letters.
He received his B.Sc. with First Class Honours, and his Ph.D. from the Imperial
College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London; his J.D., magna cum laude,
from Georgetown University Law Center; his Diplomarbeit from Eidgenössische
Technische Hochschule in Zürich. He was a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical
School and conducted postdoctoral research at Cambridge University.
Dr. Booth is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, and the U.S.
Patent and Trademark Office of Maryland. He is a member of the American Bar
Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, New York Biotechnology Association, and the American
Chemical Society.
