Biography:

Hal Shaftel concentrates in complex commercial litigation, and has handled cutting edge cases both at the trial and appellate levels in federal and state courts across the country, as well as in both domestic and international arbitration forums. In particular, he has extensive experience in antitrust, securities, insurance/reinsurance, intellectual property, and product liability litigation. His clients include major companies and individuals in the banking, securities, pharmaceutical, Internet and consulting industries.

In the antitrust context, Hal represents clients in connection with both governmental and private class actions. He has handled multidistrict proceedings in federal courts, as well as matters before the Federal Trade Commission and other antitrust regulatory bodies. Many of these antitrust matters also have implicated sophisticated patent and intellectual property issues.

Hal's securities experience includes the defense of securities class actions and derivative actions, and tender offer litigation, as well as the representation of officers and directors with regard to liability and corporate governance matters. He also has prevailed in a number of securities industry arbitrations on behalf of broker-dealer clients.

With respect to insurance matters, he has prevailed at trial and successfully settled a number of multimillion dollar cases with respect to director and officer liability, advertising liability and product liability. His cases have resulted in groundbreaking law concerning coverage determinations, trigger of coverage and allocation issues. He also represents various international reinsurers in arbitration proceedings addressing claims handling, accounting and other industry practices.

His product liability defense work experience includes the representation, at both the trial and appellate levels, of a major blood bank institution in connection with the defense of personal injury cases.

He has published a number of articles in legal periodicals concerning topics relevant to general business litigation, involving important discovery and arbitration practice topics. He has been a frequent media commentator and has given presentations on various litigation practice issues and corporate governance rules.

Hal graduated from Yale Law School where he was an editor of the Yale Law Journal. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale College where he was magna cum laude.

Hal is an active member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and has served on its Products Liability Committee. He is also a member of the American Bar Association.
