| Biography:
John H. Gross is a partner in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department of Proskauer Rose LLP, and the head of its insurance coverage practice. Chambers USA’s America’s Leading Lawyers for Business reports that “Proskauer Rose is the best of the best when it comes to representing policyholders in disputes.” John is ranked as a leading lawyer in Chambers 2008, where he is described as, "'head and shoulders above the crowd,' John Gross continues to earn plaudits for his work on a number of headline-grabbing cases."
John has been lead counsel in civil litigations for many major U.S. corporations, including AT&T; Bear Stearns, Bovis Lend Lease, Brunswick; Champion; DuPont; Georgia Pacific; Home Depot; International Paper; JP Morgan Chase; Lucent; Mobil; Omnicom; Philip Morris; Reynolds; and Witco. John has lectured on insurance coverage issues at the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Practising Law Institute, American Corporate Counsel Association, and other professional organizations.
John was trial counsel for Silverstein Properties in its insurance coverage litigation for property damage to the Twin Towers and business interruption resulting from the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The jury returned a verdict in favor of Silverstein Properties’ position that what happened at the World Trade Center was two occurrences. As a result, Silverstein Properties is entitled to payment from its insurance companies of an additional $1.1 billion.
John has also advised the City of New York on legal issues arising from the September 11 events, and represents JP Morgan Chase in coverage disputes arising out of the fall of Enron and WorldCom.
John is a graduate of The Wharton School of Finance and Commerce of the University of Pennsylvania, and George Washington University Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review. He served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, where he was Assistant Chief of the Criminal Division.
John also was appointed Associate Special Counsel to the United States Department of Justice to assist in investigating allegations involving the Carter Warehouse and the funding of President Carter’s presidential campaign.
John also taught trial advocacy as an Adjunct Associate Professor at New York University Law School and has been a faculty member on trial advocacy programs sponsored by the United States Department of Justice, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and Harvard Law School.
John has received recognition in numerous publications including Chambers, the Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, and World's Leading Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers. John was also named one of America's leading 500 litigators in Lawdragon and profiled in The New York Times, Crain's New York Business and the University of Pennsylvania Gazette, where he was named one of New York's preeminent business litigators.
