| Biography:
Steve Obus, a partner in Proskauer's Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department
resident in New York, has had extensive experience in both the public and private
sectors litigating significant cases. Prior to coming to the Firm, Steve was
an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, where
he served as Chief of the Civil Rights Unit, Chief Appellate Attorney and Chief
of the Civil Division. As Chief of the Civil Division, Steve supervised a staff
of 48 civil litigators who represented the United States in a broad range of
matters, including major constitutional and law enforcement-related litigation
such as the government's civil RICO action against the International Brotherhood
of Teamsters.
Since joining Proskauer in 1990, Steve has tried numerous cases in the federal
and state courts, and before arbitrators; including the defense, through a six-week
jury trial, of a massive federal securities fraud class action; and the prosecution,
through a three-week jury trial, of a fraud action against a major insurer.
He has handled a wide variety of commercial matters, including antitrust claims,
insurance coverage claims, securities claims, derivative claims, false advertising
claims and employment-related claims, as well as many other contract, fraud,
defamation and unfair competition matters. Steve also has frequently represented
health care providers in cases that have presented issues ranging from the validity
of exclusive contracts with specialty practice groups to a comatose patient's
"right to die." Among the many other matters that Steve has litigated
at Proskauer are the prosecution of the Klinghoffer family's lawsuit against
the Palestine Liberation Organization arising out of the hijacking of the Achille
Lauro cruise liner, and the defense of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center
against a constitutional challenge to the overhaul of the Center's labor system,
which was undertaken in connection with an effort to rid the Center of the influence
of organized crime.
As an Assistant United States Attorney from 1980 to 1990, Steve represented
the United States at trial and on appeal in numerous cases, including the New
York litigation challenging the reapportionment of Congress based on the 1980
Census. On behalf of the Board of Judges of the Southern District of New York,
Steve successfully defended against a First Amendment challenge by a television
network to the federal rule prohibiting the broadcasting of judicial proceedings.
In addition to practicing law, Steve has served as an instructor at the United
States Attorney General's Advocacy Institute and at the National Institute of
Trial Advocacy (Northeast Region), and has lectured on federal appellate advocacy
for the New York State Bar Association.
Steve is a graduate of Rutgers College and Columbia University School of Law.
He is admitted to practice in the courts of the State of New York, as well as
in the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts
of New York, the United States Circuit Courts for the Second and Fourth Circuits,
and the United States Supreme Court.
