| Biography:
Peter Sherwin is a partner in Proskauer's Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department and chair of the International Arbitration Practice. He splits his time between the NY and Paris offices.
Peter has represented numerous corporate entities and individuals in a variety of substantive areas, with a concentration on cross-border disputes regarding high-stakes private investments or sophisticated financial products. Peter’s major clients include JPMorganChase, Colgate-Palmolive Company, Charterhouse Group, Norex Petroleum, and Pershing. He regularly practices before the federal and state courts in New York and international arbitral tribunals.
Recent matters include:
- Obtained a complete victory for the principal owner of the Florida Marlins professional baseball club in an international arbitration and companion RICO lawsuit brought by his limited partners. The claimants sought over US$210 million stemming from myriad fraud and other claims, but, after a multi-month hearing, the tribunal unanimously rejected all of the claims, vindicating the client.
- Represent Norex Petroleum as plaintiff in a US$1.5 billion RICO dispute concerning the takeover of a Russian oil company. Successfully reinstated all claims on appeal to the Second Circuit.
- Successfully represented professional hockey star Alexander Ovechkin in a proceeding brought by his former Russian team under the NY Convention attempting to enjoin him from playing based upon a Russian arbitration award. The federal court in Washington D.C. rejected the club’s petition, and Ovechkin went on that season to be named NHL Rookie of the Year.
- Obtained a favorable pre-hearing resolution for a U.K. claimant in an ICDR arbitration concerning the validity of a distribution agreement with a U.S. entity, where the contract was valued at over US$50 million.
Peter is a U.S. Representative to the ICC Commission on Arbitration, which establishes the rules and policies for ICC arbitration and dispute resolution. Peter is a member of Mayor Bloomberg’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary, and he is the Chair of Citizens Union and Citizens Union Foundation, NYC’s preeminent good government organization. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the New York State Bar Association and chairs the Special Committee on Collateral Consequences of Criminal Proceedings.
Peter clerked for U.S. District Judge Ann Aldrich (N.D. Ohio) and graduated from Columbia University School of Law, where he was articles editor of the Journal of Transnational Law. He also attended Washington & Lee University, receiving a B.S. in chemistry and a B.A. in French and German (magna cum laude; Phi Beta Kappa).
Peter is a member of the bars of the United States Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeal for the Second, Third, Ninth and Tenth Circuits, the United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern, and Northern Districts of New York, and the State of New York.
