Biography:

Bela P. Amladi is the international law associate in the Trademark Practice Group at Proskauer Rose LLP's New York office. Bela has extensive knowledge of intellectual property laws worldwide, having studied and practiced in this area both in the United States and abroad. Widely traveled, her experience and working knowledge of trademark and copyright laws and procedures on a country by country basis enables her to effectively structure and enhance the value of clients' trademark and copyright portfolios.

Bela has primary responsibility for counseling clients with regard to clearance and adoption of marks, prosecution, and the direct handling of infringement actions in foreign jurisdictions and litigation overseas, including the supervision and maintenance of registrations worldwide. She has advised a diverse range of clients in the clothing, pharmaceutical, chemical and software businesses, as well as entertainment companies, publishers, designers and artists, in connection with acquisition, exploitation and enforcement of their trademarks and copyrights.

With the expansion of international trade, integration of markets, liberalization of closed economies and commerce via the global computer network, there has been an increase in licensing, distribution and franchising arrangements. Bela has negotiated and prepared license agreements for both small and large clients, enabling them to expand the reputation of their marks and providing access to new territories in cost-effective ways. The shift in international finance in the nineties to Europe and South Asia has highlighted the importance and value of trademarks and copyrights. Bela has prepared and recorded security interest agreements worldwide for clients who have used intellectual property as collateral to raise finance. Bela has also obtained protection for major trademark and copyright holders in these regions, as well as coordinated international enforcement and anti-counterfeiting activities.

Bela also works with several individuals, businesses and law firms abroad advising them on U.S. trademark procedures and protection of rights within the United States.

Bela has a B.A. in English and French Literature and received her LL.B. from the University of Bombay. Upon completion of her studies in law, she passed the solicitor's examination given by the Bombay Incorporated Law Society and was awarded a scholarship to pursue an LL.M. She was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1990. Bela has lectured on design, copyright and trademark laws at the Industrial Design Center of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. She has a diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication.
