Overview

Proskauer’s Chicago office has quickly established itself as an important presence in the legal community and a key to the firm’s continued expansion into major financial centers around the world. We provide a Midwest base for clients who benefit from our ability to marshal the talents and experience of lawyers from all of our offices and practices globally. The office has nationally recognized leaders whose practices focus on: general commercial litigation; insurance coverage litigation and counseling; bankruptcy and corporate restructuring; distressed mergers and acquisitions; health care; and not-for-profit/exempt organizations.

Our litigation lawyers appear in contested matters not only in Illinois and the Midwest but across the U.S. and abroad, as well as before administrative and regulatory agencies, and U.S. and international arbitral tribunals. They have broad commercial litigation experience, including major technology and contract disputes, class action, trademark and trade secret issues, labor and employment, real estate, securities and antitrust. They also have served as coordinating counsel for a variety of consumer and tort cases.

The lawyers in our Insurance Recovery & Counseling Group have experience in all types of coverage and recovery issues. We have been involved in some of the largest and most high-profile insurance cases and have obtained billions of dollars of recoveries for our clients. Chambers USA says we are "extremely adept at translating complex issues into a means of reaching a successful conclusion." In addition to representing policyholders in coverage disputes with their insurers, a substantial part of our practice involves advisory work, including policy review and negotiation and coverage analysis. One of the only such practices in the Midwest, we are one of a handful of policyholder practices in the country with a practical understanding of reinsurance and captive issues.

The Bankruptcy & Restructuring Group focuses on representing distressed clients of all types, including middle and upper market public and private companies in workouts, restructurings and Chapter 11 cases, as well as private equity funds in distressed acquisitions. The lawyers in this group advise clients on the full spectrum of insolvency-related matters, playing a leading role in complex, interdisciplinary cases across a broad range of industries: retail; media; manufacturing; distribution; finance, including subprime mortgage and warehouse lenders; hedge funds; automotive; and health care. Our insolvency lawyers also represent hedge fund managers, investors and the funds themselves in situations of distress and/or fraud, as well as act as independent fiduciaries overseeing receivership and bankruptcy estates.

Our labor and employment practice focuses on litigating single and class action disputes stemming from workplace harassment and employment discrimination claims. We also represent employers in collective and class actions involving allegations of wage and hour violations under state and federal law, as well as handle internal investigations regarding allegations of discrimination or other wrongdoing involving senior executives. Our lawyers defend and enforce non-compete agreements, handle trade secret protection cases and counsel clients with respect to all of their human resources policies to ensure compliance with state and federal laws. The team represents clients before state and federal courts throughout the country as well as before the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Illinois Human Rights Commission and the American Arbitration Association.

Part of an expanding global practice, our Chicago health care team handles high-stakes mergers and acquisitions, deals for top hospitals, including many notable privatizations and restructurings, health care compliance issues and cross-border representation of health care companies in regulatory and transactional matters. Our lawyers also represent private equity firms in health care acquisitions and advise on regulatory and reimbursement issues for their health care portfolio companies.

The Not-for-Profit/Exempt Organizations Group handles the tax-exempt concerns of large private foundations and public charities, such as hospitals, nursing homes and universities, as well as supporting organizations, charitable trusts, title-holding companies, civic welfare organizations, business and sports leagues, and voluntary employee-beneficiary associations.
