Our summer associate program has been the primary means of entry for new lawyers at Proskauer for more than 30 years and, for many of our current lawyers, the first step in their careers at the firm. We are committed to ensuring that our summer associates receive meaningful training and assignments, as well as constructive evaluation as well as replicate, as closely as possible, the experience of being a Proskauer associate. You’ll work on complex and challenging matters alongside some of the top lawyers in the field while developing relationships with your colleagues.
Summer associates can expect substantive assignments, as well as shadowing opportunities with senior lawyers, that are similar to those given to junior associates, including: assist in or attend a deposition, courtroom argument or administrative hearing; participate in or attend a labor arbitration or negotiation; attend a client conference; assist in the formation of corporate entities and draft transactional documents; attend a corporate or real estate closing; assist in the development and drafting of an estate plan or a tax strategy for a merger or acquisition transaction.
Mentoring and support
Summer associates have two mentors: a partner to act as their reviewing attorney as well as an associate advisor. Both mentors provide consistent guidance and support throughout the summer. Summer associates also receive midsummer and final reviews to aid with their development.
In addition to substantive work, summer associates are encouraged to observe experienced lawyers in action. Opportunities are available across practice areas and allow summer associates exposure to all elements of client service, from depositions and arbitrations to meetings and conference calls. It is through this program that Proskauer provides both a realistic view of the legal profession and a strong foundation for a successful career.
Training and development
We understand that an associate's legal career begins on the first day of his or her summer program. Our summer associate program is structured to combine work and training with an emphasis on timely feedback. Summer associate interns are assigned projects, receive guidance and are evaluated with a focus on skill enhancement and exposure to legal practice at its most sophisticated level.
The training offered to summer associates mirrors the programming provided to junior associates, presenting a window into life at the firm. We believe assignments are the best training ground, giving summer associates opportunities to work on our clients' important matters, which often turn into valuable teaching opportunities. Outside the office
Our summer program also offers an introduction to life at Proskauer through cultural, recreational and social events. These functions are designed to provide summer associates the opportunity to build long lasting relationships with one another and lawyers at the firm. In addition, many of these events, such as attending the Tony Awards and the NBA Draft, highlight the firm's unique clients.
